Stuck in the Worry Loop? Give Your Mind a Job.
Jun 29, 2026
I think I've been in a long-term relationship with worry.
We've known each other for years.
Overwhelm likes to tag along too. Together we go to work, sit beside each other during stressful days, and huddle together at night when I can't sleep.
Maybe you know them too?
The trouble is, we can end up giving these uninvited companions far more attention than they deserve. Before we know it, worry is making the decisions and overwhelm has taken over your guest room!!
So how do we stop letting them run the show and make more space for calm?
The answer might be simpler than you think.
Give Your Mind a Job
When worry takes over, your mind is already working overtime.
It's scanning for danger, replaying conversations, predicting worst-case scenarios, and trying to solve problems that don't have answers yet.
So instead of telling your mind to "stop worrying" (which rarely works), give it a different job.
Notice the warmth of your tea.
Count the birds you can hear outside.
Fold the towels and pay attention to the feel of the fabric.
Water your plants.
Go for a walk and see if you can spot five different shades of green.
Your mind likes having something meaningful to do.
By gently directing your attention towards an everyday activity, you interrupt the worry loop and give your nervous system an opportunity to settle.
Sometimes the goal isn't to stop thinking.
It's simply to give your mind somewhere more helpful to go.
